What Are Family Goals?

Goals. We all have them. Sometimes they are short term goals like getting all the laundry done by the end of the day. Other times, they are long term goals like saving enough money to be able to retire. Goals are important because they give us focus. Did you know that setting goals with the families in your program is just as important as setting goals for the children?

As an educator, you have goals for the children in your program and you plan activities and experiences to help them reach these goals. Setting goals with families is just as important. Why? Because when you set goals with families, everyone is on the same page. When everyone knows what the goals are, they can work together toward the same thing. This links “home” with “school” in a meaningful, positive way.

Working together to set family goals might be something you do at the beginning of the new school year or it may be something you do every month. That is up to you and the families in your program. And great news…setting family goals may seem like a challenging task but it does not have to be!
